Butyl and halobutyl polymers are used in a number of consumer product
applications including ball bladders and condenser packing.
Ball Bladders
EXXON Butyl and
EXXON Bromobutyl polymers offer excellent air retention properties making
them a key component in bladders used in the sporting goods industry. Butyl
and bromobutyl can be blended with natural rubber to improve spliceability and
cure rates, while still retaining good air retention properties. Additional
information on butyl and bromobutyl polymers can be found within this website.
Condenser packing
Condenser packing for electrical appliances is an excellent application
utilizing the unique characteristics of low permeability (sealability of
electrolyte of chemical condenser) and chemical inertness (no affect to and
from electrolyte) associated with EXXON Butyl. The polyisobutylene backbone of
this elastomer imparts superior barrier properties, minimizing the
transmission of air and water vapor, and makes this polymer more resistance to
heat and mechanical work compared to most rubbers. EXXON Butyl has very good
dielectric properties and is an excellent electrical insulator. It can be
compounded for both conventional and heat resistant applications.
